Dr. Judy Ranka accepted an invitation to join the International Standards Organization Technical Committee 168 (ISO TC168) Prosthetics and Orthotics Working Group 1 Nomenclature and Classification and Working Group 2 Medical Aspects in October 2016 at their working meeting in Glasgow, Scotland. ISO TC168 WG1 and WG2 was formed in 1977 and is chartered with standardization in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, covering such aspects as performance, safety, environmental factors, interchangeability, etc. Temporary and permanent procedures and devices are included. Twenty five standards have been published to date. A new standard being developed focuses on upper limb orthotics which is within Dr. Ranka’s expertise. Fifteen countries have representation on this multidisciplinary Committee which includes prosthetists, orthotists, orthopaedic surgeons, rehabilitation engineers, physiotherapists, orthopaedic shoe manufacturers and rehabilitation administrators. Eighteen other countries function as observers. The working committee meets twice per year with the next meeting scheduled for June 2017 in Hanover, Germany. This will be followed by a second meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland in October, 2017.
