The Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform System of Task Analysis (PRPP System) is one of the Occupational Performance Model (Australia) assessment and intervention models. It comprises an assessment (PRPP Assessment) and an intervention (PRPP Intervention). The PRPP System focuses on how people USE cognition to achieve occupational performance goals. It is applicable to people of all ages, from infancy to advanced age, irrespective of diagnosis, severity, chronicity or setting.

The Perceive, Recall, Plan & Perform Assessment (PRPP-A) is a criterion referenced, strengths based approach that is person centred, culturally responsive and evidence based. It is administered in two stages. Stage One Task Performance Mastery assesses occupational performance mastery; that is, how well occupations are performed. Stage Two Cognitive Strategy Application identifies reasons for task performance mistakes. An information processing model of cognition underpins the structure of Stage Two where processing operations have been operationalised as cognitive strategy use behaviours. These behaviours align with dimensions of attention and sensory processing (Perceive), learning and memory (Recall), planning, problem solving and self-appraisal (Plan), and initiation of responses and action monitoring (Perform). Stage Two yields information about effective and ineffective strategy application impacting occupational performance mastery.

The PRPP-A is used internationally, and has been translated into several languages. It has established validity in a variety of practice domains. Acceptable reliability has been demonstrated following training.

OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the occupational therapy, neurosciences and educational foundation of the assessment, and its psychometric properties.
2. Assess and score task performance mastery from videotaped examples using Stage One of the PRPP Assessment.
3. Assess and score cognitive strategy application behaviours applied to tasks on dimensions of perceive, recall, plan and perform from videotaped examples using Stage Two of the PRPP Assessment.
4. Write specific, measurable mastery and strategy application goals from information gained through assessment.
5. Use the PRPP Assessment as a person centred outcome measure of occupational performance.
6. Relate findings from assessment to implications for intervention.

This course will be taught by Associate Professor Chris Chapparo and Dr. Judy Ranka who are occupational therapists, researchers and educators with extensive national and international teaching experience.

COURSE FULL

DESCRIPTION: The Upper Limb Performance Assessment is an ecologically valid, criterion-referenced, two-stage assessment of upper limb contributions to task performance (Ranka, & Chapparo, 2011). It can be used with any client who demonstrates difficulties with any aspect of reach, grasp and release regardless of cause. Stage One, Task Performance Mastery (TPM), is used to analyze and assess the degree to which a person can perform the motor steps of any needed or desired task in context. Errors are identified using a specific classification system. Steps performed without error are used to calculate a performance mastery percentage score. Stage Two, the Comparative Analysis of Performance –Motor (CAP-M), is used to identify specific elements of movement disorders that contribute to errors identified in Stage One. Stage Two is based on a comparative method of observation. The ability of the ULPA to measure subtle, incremental changes in performance of client specific tasks has been demonstrated (Crippin, Ranka, Nott, Barden & Baguley, 2012). The symptoms identified through the CAP-M are used to select and apply impairment-focused interventions, and to embed these interventions within task oriented therapy programs that aims to improve mastery. Reliability and validity of the ULPA has been demonstrated (Barden, Nott, Baguley & Chapparo, in press; Crippen, Ranka, Nott & Baguley, 2012; Rae, Copley & Ranka, 2010).

OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe elements of the ULPA and understand its psychometric properties.
2. Compare and contrast the ULPA with other assessments of the upper limb function (eg. MAS, ARAT, GAS).
3. Assess and score task performance mastery from videotaped client examples using Stage One.
4. Assess and score motor strategy application behaviours applied to tasks on dimensions of reach, grasp and release from videotaped client examples Stage Two.
5. Use findings from the ULPA to write specific, measureable mastery and strategy application goals, discuss implications for intervention, and calculate and graph outcomes.
